While they are seen everywhere today, white T-shirts were not always popular. The idea of the white T-shirt came from a piece of clothing called the union suit. The union suit, which covered the whole body, was worn under a person’s clothes and considered underwear. Around the early 1900s, people started separating the union suit into two pieces. This made it easier to put on and take off. Then, the Cooper Underwear Company designed a new type of undershirt. It was a simple shirt with no buttons.
