Shelby Van Pelt was raised in Tacoma, Washington, a city in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. It features beautiful coastlines and impressive aquariums. Van Pelt enjoyed going to aquariums when she was little. Sitting in the dark and observing sea creatures allowed her to feel a strong connection to the animals. The original inspiration for the octopus character in Remarkably Bright Creatures came from a viral video. It shows an octopus trying to escape from its tank.
