Many activists, artists, and celebrities have spoken out against the Canadian seal hunt because it is seen as extremely cruel. The baby seals are chased down by hunters holding large wooden clubs. They are then struck violently over the head. Hunters also shoot at seals from their boats, but because skins are worth less with bullet holes in them, using clubs is the preferred killing method. As far back as 2007, an international team of veterinarians studying the hunt said it was unacceptably inhumane.
