Every July 4, thousands of Americans gather on the beach at Coney Island in New York City. They do not visit for American Independence Day, though. They come to witness the world-famous Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. The goal of the contest is to determine which contestant can devour the most hot dogs in 10 minutes. Eaters must finish the entire hot dog and bun for it to count. Contestants are allowed to dip the buns in water, which makes them easier to swallow.
