He spent most of his early years traveling with his father, who was a stage actor. At age seven, he was sent to boarding school, away from his family. He was later admitted to Princeton University but dropped out before finishing his first year. After that, O’Neill started what he called his real education through “life experience.” The following years nearly cost him his life. O’Neill became addicted to alcohol during his travels around the world by sea and later contracted tuberculosis.
