During World War II, London experienced the Blitz. It was a period when German planes dropped bombs on the city. The bombings lasted from September 1940 to May 1941 and brought about terrible destruction. To give the people of London a safe place to hide, the British government built tunnels that were 30 meters below ground. These tunnels were built between 1940 and 1942, and they are now known as the Kingsway Exchange Tunnels, or the London Tunnels.
