It may seem like magic to grow a plant in a completely sealed environment, but the science behind a terrarium is relatively simple. Two primary principles are at work in a terrarium: photosynthesis and transpiration. First, set up the terrarium properly. Most terrariums contain small rocks for water to drain through, some substances to help keep the air clean, soil, a plant, and a small amount of water. These are placed inside the glass container, which is then closed.
