Since ancient times, people have been curious about whether others are telling the truth or lying. Various methods have been used throughout history by different societies to separate fact from fiction. In ancient India, suspects of crimes were asked to chew on rice and spit it out after telling their story. If the rice looked dry after being chewed, the suspect was considered guilty. The ancient Indians believed that liars produced less saliva because of the stress and fear they were experiencing.
