One of the most curious creatures is the tanuki, or the Japanese raccoon dog. In nature, tanuki are small brown animals that are easily recognized for the dark circles around their eyes. Although they look similar to the North American raccoon, tanuki are actually more closely related to wolves and foxes. Throughout Japan, you can spot statues of chubby, wide-eyed tanuki in wide-brim hats. According to folklore, the tanuki has many magical abilities. The most well-known one is their ability to transform into humans or other animals.
