Makoto Shinkai is leading the next generation of Japanese animation. The animated films that he has created over the last 20 years are some of the most popular films of all time. Shinkai was born in Nagano Prefecture in 1973. Growing up, he always had an interest in manga and anime. After he graduated from university in 1996, he took a job with a video game company. He worked there for five years. During this time, he also produced animation on his own.
