Researchers have made a new substance from chitin, a type of protein that is found in the tough shells of crabs and shrimps. This substance is then combined with a metal element called zinc to create the key part of the battery. According to the research team, the crab shell battery can break down completely in soil after only a few months, leaving behind zinc, which is actually recyclable. Every year, six to eight million tons of seafood waste is produced all over the world. It is a shame to see this valuable material dumped back into the ocean or thrown away in landfills.
