La Mercè is a yearly festival held throughout Barcelona, Spain, in honor of the city’s patron saint, Our Lady of Mercy. While the official celebration is on September 24, festivities usually begin a few days earlier. The festival’s history goes back to the night of September 24, 1218. It is believed that on this night, Our Lady of Mercy appeared to the king and two saints and ordered them to save Christians who were being held prisoner in lands occupied by foreign forces.
