The ancient Egyptians were the first to celebrate birthdays, but it was linked to the day when their kings took the throne. People believed that when this happened, kings were reborn as gods. To celebrate, they held huge events. The Greeks loved this idea and added a sweet twist to these celebrations––cake. To honor Artemis, the goddess of the Moon, they baked round cakes to represent the Moon and topped them with candles.
