壹蘋派生活美語　爆米花是怎麼來的？

　　According to some Native American legends, each corn kernel houses a tiny spirit. When the fire gets too hot, it becomes angry and bursts out of the kernel’s hull. Of course, science says differently. Popcorn kernels pop when heated because they contain a small amount of water, which is stored inside a circle of soft starch. When the kernel is heated, the water inside becomes steam, which forces the starch to swell.

　　根據一些美洲原住民的傳說，每顆玉米粒中都蘊藏著一個小精靈。當火變得太熱時，祂會發怒並從玉米粒的外殼爆發出來。當然，科學並不是這樣說的。爆米花粒在加熱時會爆開，因為它們含有少量的水，這些水儲存在一圈軟澱粉內。當玉米粒被加熱時，裡面的水會變成水蒸氣，迫使澱粉膨脹。
