Jerry Spinelli, the author of Loser, has written many children’s books, but he did not always long to be a writer. When he was younger, he wanted to be a cowboy or a baseball player. This changed when he was 16. He wrote a poem about his high school football team winning a game. After his poem was published in the local newspaper, he made up his mind to be a writer. His first job after college was as a magazine editor. He wrote stories that were intended for adults in his free time.
