Route 66, also called the “Mother Road,” is the most famous road in North America. It connects Chicago to Los Angeles, and its history is closely related to the rise of cars and interstate travel. In the 20th century, Route 66 became a symbol of freedom and opportunity for millions who made the trip west across the United States. As the number of car owners increased in the early 20th century, modern roads were needed to transport goods from the industrialized east to the recently settled west.
