In 1868, he decided to build a castle that could help him escape from the public. He thought the perfect place to build it was on top of a mountain. However, there were already two castles on that mountain peak at the time, so they were destroyed to make room for his castle. He named it Neuschwanstein Castle. The new castle was meant to have more than 200 rooms, but only 15 or so were ever finished. Instead of being a place for defense like a traditional castle, Neuschwanstein Castle was used as a peaceful place for the king to relax in.
