In 1957, engineers Alfred Fielding and Marc Chavannes were trying to produce a new type of wallpaper. Their idea was to seal two shower curtains together to create 3D wallpaper. The wallpaper failed to catch on, but they still made patents for it. In 1960, bubble wrap was first used as packing material for IBM computers. The computers would arrive with no damage, and soon after, bubble wrap was used for packing all sorts of goods. Today, it' s a standard packing material in the e - commerce world.
